Author’s Note
I hate to disappoint you before we even get started, but you won’t find anything new in this book. Here’s why:

Adding subtracting, multiplying, dividing, exponents – you’ve been counting since you were two. These are all just shortcut ways to count.

Variables, functions, factoring, the quadratic equation – you’ve been using unknowns and substitution all your life. This is the same thing. “I don’t get it,” you say. There you go – the word it is an unknown!

The thing is, you do get it – you just don’t know it yet. Algebra’s in your words, your music, the way you dance, your money, and what you eat. And that’s why getting to know it a little better’s going to make your life a little sweeter.

I hope you enjoy the book.

Chapter 1, Sets and Symbols

Algebra is a language. Like Spanish, French, or English, it’s used to tell stories, share ideas, and solve problems. And just like any unfamiliar language, at first glance algebra can seem like just a lot of cryptic gibberish. The first step toward getting a grip is to get familiar with some of algebra’s basic symbols. Along the way, you can explore the ideas that these symbols represent.

The difference between symbols and ideas

A symbol is a mark (or two) that conveys a specific meaning. People use symbols like the ones in Figure 1.1 to get their ideas down in writing. English sentences are made up of words—which are formed by combining the 26 symbols of the English alphabet—and some little marks known as punctuation. Algebraic statements are written in much the same way.

Figure 1.1
Here are some symbols you may know.

add

count forward

+

subtract

count backward

-

equality

same on either side

=

Tip: Throughout the book, you’ll be using mathematical symbols, and some of them may be new to you. Don’t get frustrated if you don’t become fluent instantly. Heed the advice of Mark Twain, who said “Use a word three times and it’s yours.” The same thing can be said for math’s symbols.
